Teacher guided learning is an instructional technique for small group which is integrated into other

teaching methods to provide a bridge between whole class instruction and independent work. It is

direct teaching and works best when students are learning concepts or skills in a subject.

In whole class instruction, the level of achievement and rate of progress among students differs

widely. Students need further support, better interaction with the teacher to consolidate and extent

knowledge and skills to overcome their difficulties. Guided learning helps in clarify difficulties of

students. It is useful for students with educational disabilities and high achievers because they get

close interaction and attention from the teacher on a systematic basis.

Guided learning sessions are flexible and lasts for 10 to 30 minutes depending on the nature of work..

In guided learning pupils are grouped according to ability or learning need/ learning difficulty.

Teacher plans the sessions for providing the right amount of support. Teacher should support students

so that they learn to work independently. Guided learning builds pupil’s interdependence through

intervention, interaction and collaboration. Here the teacher is not just listening to the students but

the teacher continue to teach and remains close to students.

Procedure of Guided Learning

Introduction: Students are divided into groups on the basis of stage of progress or learning need.

Groups size should be 4 to 6. During introduction the objectives of the session are made clear to

the students. The task or the work and content is informed by the teacher.

Learning check: Teacher reviews or checks the prior knowledge of learners and teacher informs

the strategies, skills and knowledge to to be developed.

Independent work: Pupils undertake the task or activity, individually or in pairs independently

without the support of the teacher. Teacher monitors the students and find out their strength

and areas for attention and discussion.

Re-work: Pupils return to the task or activity again with the support and intervention from the

teacher. Here they discuss and revise their work and refine their knowledge and skills.

Instructional conversation between the teacher and the students take place and provide

significant development in learning. Students are given confidence and support to revise the work

in a constructive way.

Role of Teacher:

In guided learning teacher is active and interactive. Teacher should work as a mediator. Teacher has

to interveen during introduction, during activity and after the activity. Teacher should maintain a

positive and constructive climate in the class. Teachers supports and builds confidence in students.
