Teacher Competencies as ldentified by NCTE
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has identified ten core competencies essential for teachers to become professionally competent. These competencies are outlined below:
1. Contextual Competencies:
One of the primary responsibilities of a teacher is to ensure that the parents and community appreciate the value of their work. Teachers need the ability to understand various contexts, including historical, socio-economic, cultural, linguistic, and religious backgrounds of students' families and the community profile. For example, teachers should be able to identify causes of low enrollment, poor performance, and other issues like dropout and stagnation that hinder educational progress.
2. Conceptual Competencies:
Teachers should possess clarity of thought, a deep understanding of educational theories, and thorough knowledge of various educational trends, pedagogical methods, and techniques. They should understand child development at different stages to effectively deliver the curriculum and manage classroom organization. Knowledge of global trends, including globalization, modernization, liberalization, and privatization, and their educational implications is also essential.
3. Content-Related Competencies:
Teachers must have a complete mastery of the subject content they are to teach. They should identify challenging areas and gaps in the curriculum that require further explanation and seek areas where joyful and collaborative learning can occur.
4. Transactional Competencies:
Educational transactional competencies involve the skills needed for effective teaching through meaningful interactions. This includes organizing activities like storytelling, singing, games, field trips, and cultural events to make learning engaging. Teachers should prepare relevant teaching aids, integrate continuous evaluation, diagnose strengths and weaknesses in their teaching strategies, and identify students needing extra support or enrichment.
5. Curriculum-Related Competencies:
Teachers should promote both cognitive and non-cognitive development in students. They need the ability to organize curricular and co-curricular activities that align with educational objectives, including social and cultural events like morning assemblies and celebration days.
6. Competencies in Developing Teaching-Learning Materials:
Teachers must create engaging teaching aids to make learning easier and more activity-based. They should be skilled in developing age-appropriate textual and self-learning materials, adapting materials for children with special needs, and creating workbooks and activity books. Proficiency in using electronic tools, such as computers and CDs, enhances the teaching process.
7. Evaluation Competencies:
Teachers should continuously evaluate students’ progress toward achieving curriculum objectives. They need the ability to conduct systematic evaluations, maintain observation records, assess children's values and attitudes, diagnose learning difficulties, and undertake action research as needed.
8. Management Competencies:
Teachers must manage their classrooms effectively, optimizing time, energy, and resources to achieve high-quality educational goals. This includes skills in classroom management and organizing resources efficiently.
9. Competencies Related to Working with Parents:
Teachers should be able to involve and collaborate with parents to achieve educational objectives. They must have the ability to discuss student challenges with parents and suggest practical solutions.
10. Competencies Related to Working with the Community and Other Agencies:
To improve educational standards, teachers must foster a strong relationship between schools and communities. They should engage with community members to support the school’s regular and effective functioning and contribute to its continuous development.
These competencies are essential for teachers’ professional development and play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of education.
